Letter addressed to William Duane, Junior Esq., Philadelphia, informs Duane that his books have been sold at auction. Harwood mentions the outfitting of his new steamship, Missouri, and discusses how the use of steam brings this country nearer to Europe.

Duane, son of William Duane (1760-1835), worked at the Aurora general advertiser in Philadelphia, practiced law (from 1815) and later served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1833).
